BACKGROUND: St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a popular over-the-counter antidepressant. Its antidepressive effect has been attributed in part to inhibition of monoamine transporters and monoamine oxidase, on the basis of in vitro studies. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study, 16 healthy subjects (11 men and 5 women; mean age, 31 +/- 5 years) ingested either St John's wort (300 mg three times daily) or placebo for 7 days. Patients with no prior chemotherapy and with advanced and progressive follicular lymphoma (FCL) or mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) were enrolled into a treatment protocol combining CHOP/rituximab-CHOP therapy with subsequent consolidation high-dose therapy (HDT) to evaluate the safety and feasibility of this treatment. Overall, 15 patients were enrolled and 13 patients completed the entire treatment protocol without major toxicities or increased infectious complications. This study analyzed the incidence, chronology, biological features, and clinical significance of elevated numbers of these cells in a series of 165 consecutive adult patients demonstrating myeloid engraftment after myeloablative UCBT in a single institution. To assess the relationship between magnetic resonance (MR) imaging pituitary signal intensity reduction in patients with transfusional hemochromatosis and the clinical manifestation of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.Pituitary MR imaging at 0.5 T was performed in 38 consecutive patients affected by secondary hemochromatosis and in 20 healthy volunteers. Two cases of the diffuse type of giant-cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) are described. Both tumors arose in the vicinity of large joints of the lower extremity, showing similar clinical and radiological features. Histologically, a proliferation of polygonal mononuclear cells was seen, together with osteoclastlike giant cells, foam cells, and siderophages. The tumors were poorly delineated, displaying an infiltrative pattern into the neighboring soft tissues.
